Sitting Ducks: Why Millions of Arctic Seabirds Are in Danger

Nourished by the waters’ abundant fish, squid, and other sea creatures, most of the Bering Sea’s seabirds appear to be doing okay—at least for now. But across the world, seabirds are in trouble. One study published last year documented a nearly 70 percent decline in global populations between 1950 and 2010. Scientists worry that seabirds are especially sensitive to the threats of climate change, ocean acidification, commercial fishing, and shifts in marine ecosystems—threats that are only expected to intensify in the coming years.
